CAR TO X COMMUNICATION
Done are those days where people had to be very agile in driving an automobile.
We are now at the Dawn of technology.
Anything to everything is possible with technology.
So is the VEHICLE TO X COMMUNICATION.
Just like self-driving cars, the technology dubbed Car-To-X communication is not something to fear. No matter how much you hate the expansion of some elements from the IT world entering your day-to-day life, this will not bother you. Instead, it should make the roads and cities of the world safer, while also cutting down on your commute time.
In lay men terms it can be understood as the communication between the vehicle and any other entity that can affect the movement of the vehicle. Here communication can attributed to the passage of information. In general there are a large number of subsystems that come into picture when we think of the word entity; because when an automobile is transiting on the road there are various things that are a hindrance for its motion. So if we take a broader picture of this we can say that this communication system comprises of V2I (vehicle-to-infrastructure), V2N (vehicle-to-network), V2V (vehicle-to-vehicle), V2P (vehicle-to-pedestrian), V2D (vehicle-to-device) and V2G (vehicle-to-grid).
Behind the scenes:
Without such a system there were a huge number of accidents that were taking place due to various reasons like negligence of the driver, failure of the subsystems etc. But due to these failures numerous innocent lives were put at risk. Hence in order to curtail this at least to certain extent, there was a dire need of some kind of innovation.
Hence was the idea of this kind of communication system where these of road accidents are prevented to some extent. According to the latest survey conducted there was reduction of 25%of road accidents with utilization of this technology.
How Car-To-X Communication Works???
While “black magic” would be the answer to this question if you are an extreme version of an automotive purist, Car-To-X communication works with an eSIM, which also allows the owner of the said vehicle to switch his or her mobile phone provider without having to replace the SIM card of the car.
Confused? Think of connected cars as vehicles that have those USB devices that can connect a laptop to the Internet through a wireless connection over the cellular data network. Instead of fitting those units, connected cars get a permanent 4G (LTE) connection with an “eSIM”, which works using a subscription that provides a few years of free service.
Infrastructure elements work in a similar fashion, but they do not have to change their providers, and a cabled connection could also work for them. It is wise to note that those units will still need wireless transmission equipment, so using a wired link is not the best idea.
From there, all of the elements will connect to a secure Virtual Private Network. The latter allows a terminal (PC/ Smartphone / IoT device) to connect to a network with dedicated credentials, and with a specially designed IP(Internet protocol).
What Car-To-X Communication does?
You might have heard about the Audi that can “talk” to traffic lights. That is just one example of Car-To-X Communication. Not only that, a vehicle will know if there’s a point to kill power to the engine when the driver stops at a light, or just leaving it on for the few seconds it takes for the said light to turn green.
Furthermore, in autonomous driving, an automobile will be able to slow down or accelerate if the light tells it that it has time to catch it on green.
Because the entire subsystems will be connected and monitored, the system will also be capable of informing vehicles of traffic jams, and the navigation of each car could re-route each driver to avoid the queue. Vehicles will also be able to tell cars that are driving the other way that they are heading for a traffic jam. Just like the Waze (App by Google ) or Carplay
Cars will also know if there is a reckless driver up the road, and even if someone runs a red light. Before you realize, your automobile will be able to save your life or avoid a collision without having to brake with maximum force.
No doubt that it will take a while for us to get used to such a a system where we will actually not know the reason for the slowing down of automobile, but you will reach your destination faster, and in a safer manner. Even, a parking spot might be awaits for your car when it reaches the destination.
Demerits for such system:
First of all it adds cost and complexity to the entire vehicle. In places where the infrastructure is not at its best, Car-To-X might only work as Car-To-Car, and it might get even worse in remote areas, where the Internet is not available at all.
Another significant problem is that automakers will have to work together to set up a standard of communication, which is rather difficult if we look at their past.
We have about six different types of wiper arms in use today, and not even nuts are interchangeable. We are happy to see that the fuel filling works the same for all vehicles. We can only hope that this will happen to Car-To-X communication systems, but you cannot run apps from a Mac on a Windows PC, can you?
Also another major hazard is the risk of hacking with everything given access to the internet vulnerability levels will increase. Hopefully the systems available for the consumers reach to a safer levels.
To be more lucid, speeding is another major problem these days, but with a advanced tech we should be able to inform the concerned authorities. But nowhere or no company markets such a thing. Hopefully this thing becomes a speeding damper once it comes to complete use.
