WHAT IS TUBERCLE?
Well, looks like an exuberant HUMPBACK whale is chilling out, no big deal
But, can you spot an odd thing about the whale?
Yes, the flippers, they are not those mundane type of flippers you see everywhere
The sinusoidal like pattern present on the leading edge of the flapper is termed as TUBERCLE. The pattern is responsible for the splendid dexterity of the whale. With those flippers, the humungous whale can move in tight circular patterns with ease. The hydrodynamics of these flippers made engineers to pull their socks up.
WHAT TUBERCLE DOES?
The presence of tubercles at the leading-edge, enhance both HYDRODYNAMICS and AERODYNAMICS as they are related to the FLUID MECHANICS. Tubercles, on the leading- edge increase the lift and reduce the drag of the whale these primary observations are made by bio-marine engineers. These observations led to an unexpected innovation inspired by the HUMPBACK whales called the TUBERCLE TECHNOLOGY.
Later on, engineers found out the science behind the tubercles and many research papers were published. Let us discuss the engineering behind this.
FACTORS AFFECTING THE LIFT& DRAG
The fluid flow through tubercles is broken down into the narrow high velocity streams and the fluid over the flipper is more turbulent at lower speeds. The more velocity and turbulence leads to the greater lift. So, the lift is achieved at lower speeds which can be construed as the drag is reduced. The drag is reduced by increasing the lift at lower speeds.
When this same geometry is used in flights, engineers found out that the lift is increased by 6% and drag is reduced to 40% compared to the traditional air-foil. In addition, the angle of attack is increased by 35% before the stall.
Turbines using tubercle technology can generate electricity under the worst wind conditions.
HIGH-VOLUME LOW-SPEED FANS (HVLS), use this technology to distribute the larger amounts of air at low speeds and the noise is reduced to a greater extent.
This diverse Bio-mimicry innovation enhanced the efficiency of man-made creations.
